Taroom Shire Council existed as a local government entity from 1903 until 2008, when the Council was dissolved and the Shire was divided in two.
The southern portion became part of the new Western Downs Regional Council area, and the northern portion became part of Banana Shire. In doing so, Taroom became one of only three former shires in Queensland not to stay intact, alongside the shires of Tiaro and Beaudesert.
