Wandoan
Wandoan is a town and locality in the Western Downs Region, Queensland, located between Taroom and Miles.
Formerly known as 'Juandah', the town was renamed Wandoan in 1926 to avoid confusion with Jundah near Longreach.
The beginnings of the Wandoan township can be traced back to 1849 when Herbert Salway and Percival Stephen first tendered for a huge area of land: Juandah (23,000 acres), Coringa (21,000 acres), and Cherwondah (19,200 acres). This area, defined in accordance with the 1847 Orders-in-Council, fell far short of the actual size of the holding, which was estimated to be 449 square miles (1,160 km2), or five and a half times the size of the original tender. The aggregation of these three runs became known as Juandah Station.
A wayside hotel was built there in the 1890s, and by the end of the nineteenth century the hotel was well established and a township was formed.
After World War II, land around Wandoan was used for soldier settlements through ballots in the 1950s.
Wandoan continues to be the centre for the local cattle industry, and in the 2021 census, the locality of Wandoan had a population of 666 people.
