Samuel Francis Black was born in 1862, and was the eldest son of Mr. Thomas Young Black, one of the pioneers of the Dalby district.
During his boyhood he lived with his parents at Roma, Blackall, and Brisbane. Some time after leaving school he again returned to Dalby with his parents and took up mail contracts. At the time, his father was Town Clerk of Dalby Town Council, a position from which he retired in 1887, and was succeeded by Samuel, who held the office until 1899.
During his time in Dalby, Samuel Black was also secretary of the Dalby General Hospital and was the Local Authorities auditor. He went on to select land at Brigalow, where he followed pastoral pursuits until his death in 1926.
