John Wells was a shearer on 'Juandah', a well know station in the Taroom district, prior to moving to Dalby with his wife Pauline around 1874.
He became a well-known and popular man in Dalby and served as an Alderman on Dalby Town Council for a number of years, however his circumstances prevented his accepting the office of Mayor on more than one occasion.
Upon his death in 1905, at the age of 59 years, his widow received a note from Joshua P. Bell. He wrote "I had a thorough respect for Mr. Wells. When he opposed me, he refrained from abuse, when he supported me, he did so loyally. I offer you my deep sympathy in the loss of so good a husband and father. It was Wells, I may tell you, who pointed out to me the site on which the Diamond Jubilee Sanatorium is built at Dalby. After looking over it with him, I induced the Home Secretary, Sir Horace Tozer, to erect the building on that spot".
John Wells is buried beside his wife, who died in 1930, in the Dalby Monumental Cemetery.
