James Skelton was born in England circa 1815, and came to Dalby as a Police Constable, rising to the position of Police Magistrate. He had served in the army and in the native police and was particularly successful in hunting down and arresting bushrangers.
James Skelton retired from the force in the 1860s and became an Alderman on the Dalby Town Council, serving as Mayor from 1880 to 1882.
James Skelton was known to be an avid reader and was generally regarded as a fine scholar. He died in 1888 at the age of 73 years.
