Elizabeth 'Betty' Gill, was the first female Chairman of Tara Shire Council, elected March 1991.
She had been a proactive member of the community for over 40 years, and in 1989 was awarded an Order of Australia in the General Division (OAM) for service to the Tara community.
In August 1991, the communities of the Tara Shire were shocked to hear the news of Betty Gill's sudden death from a heart attack while attending a local government conference in Cairns.
In September 1991, the vacant position of Shire Chairman was filled by Councillor Don Whiteman.
