Fire broke out in the main classroom block at Meandarra State School on 15 August 1995. The fire started at approximately 8.25am when it was believed that a bar heater set a curtain alight. Staff evacuated the building, and all children and staff were accounted for.
As firefighters arrived at the scene, the middle and western classrooms were fully engulfed, so efforts were divided between extinguishing the flames and protecting the adjacent building on the western side. The fire was brought under control at 8.50am.
After the fire, the local memorial hall was used as classrooms until the new classroom building was opened on 26 April 1997.
