Following very well attended church services on 25 April 1917, a procession of approximately 400 children from the State and Convent Schools marched off from the Bell Memorial Monument to the Recreation Reserve, headed by 3 small boys bearing a Union Jack and 2 Australian flags, and accompanied by the Town Band.
On arrival, speeches were given by the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Vowles, MLA, Mr Barnes, headmaster of the State School, and Corporal Campbell.
