Dalby Fire Brigade
HistoryThe first Dalby Fire Brigade was formed in 1882. The first Dalby Fire Brigade Board appointments made in 1882 were James Skelton, Mayor of Dalby Town Council; Denis O'Brien, nominated by Dalby Town Council; Michael Jordan & William Wood, appointed by the Govenor-in-Council; Patrick Landy & John S. Jessop MLA.
The first Dalby Fire Brigade was short-lived because of the failure of local insurance companies to contribute to its financial support, & in October 1885 the services of the brigade were officially dispensed with. On 6 November 1885, the Dalby Fire Brigade funds of £51, 17s & 2p were deposited in the Queensland Savings Bank by Frank Oakes, then treasurer & trustee of the Dalby Fire Brigade Board.
The second Dalby Fire Brigade was initiated under the Fire Brigade Amendment Act 1902 at a meeting held at Dalby on 18 February 1915. The meeting was well attended, & it was moved that a brigade be formed, a provisional committee be appointed, & that there would be a call for volunteers.
A newspaper article from 24 July 1915 stated that "A proclamation has been issued. accepting the services of a number of persons who have enrolled themselves as a fire brigade under the name of the Dalby Volunteer Fire Brigade, and declaring the provisions of the Fire Brigades Acts in force in the district of the town of Dalby".
By October 1916, the fledgling brigade had received its first government subsidy and a manual fire engine was purchased the following year.
The Fire Brigade Act of 1931 had allowed for boards to make by-laws and those devised by the Dalby Fire Brigade Board were gazetted in August 1934, providing administrative guidelines for the board and firemen.
