John Lavalin Murphy was born circa 1834 in Ireland, and arrived in Australia with his wife, Anne, and two young sons on board the "Sultana" in the mid 1860s.
The family landed in Maryborough, and after time spent in Sydney and Brisbane, moved to Dalby in the 1870s. John Lavalin Murphy was listed as a selector in the Irvingdale district, selecting 80 acres in 1877.
He died in 1882 at the age of 48 years.
Note, there is a discrepancy regarding the spelling of John Murphy's middle name 'Lavalin', with some sources claiming the correct spelling is 'Levalen', which was his mother's maiden name.
