The Dalby Town Band was formed in 1925 with J. Shaw Thompson as its first president, and R. Reber was appointed temporary bandmaster. He placed the band on a sound footing, appointing the Dalby Town Council as trustees in perpetuity.
Four years after its inception, the band made its first appearance at a band contest. J. D. Napier, who was appointed bandmaster in 1929, held the baton at their first outing in Brisbane.
After winning important honours, the band competed at Rockhampton in 1930, Maryborough in 1932, and Brisbane again in 1937.The band then returned to Maryborough to take out a host of prizes, with J. D. Napier leading the band through all of the performances.
Prior to Napier's death, D. W. Trueman took over as bandmaster, and the band achieved its highest peak when it hosted a band carnival and contest in 1938, with six bands competing, and fifty nominations for solo events. The event was a highlight in Dalby's 75th celebration year.
