DescriptionBrown leather bound book titled "Jimbour Transit of Venus 1882" in gold lettering. Inside the front cover is a dedication which reads:
Presented to James Wallace Esq. In memory of much kindness.
The dedication is signed personally by Leonard Darwin & C. E. Peek.
The book is privately owned & has been passed down through the generations of the owner's family.
The following information has been provided by the book's owner:
The Royal Geographic Society came to Jimbour for the Transit of Venus in 1882. Telescopes & other equipment were shipped from England to Macalister & then carted to Jimbour.
At the time, James Wallace was the Manager of Jimbour Station. Sir Joshua Peter Bell had died the previous year & his son, Joshua Thomas Bell was yet to take up permanent residence at Jimbour House.
Leonard Darwin (son of Charles Darwin) & Cuthbert Peek presented this book to James Wallace "in memory of much kindness" during their stay at Jimbour for the Transit of Venus, 1882.
