The original Tara Post Office was run in conjunction with the railway, with the Stationmaster having responsibility for both the railway and the postal business.
In 1913, Tara residents spoke of their dissatisfaction with this arrangement as they were not receiving their mail in a timely manner. The Stationmaster at the time, Mr. G. Messer, stated that the postal business had increased significantly that year, however the Postal Department of the day stated that they would not consider establishing a post office apart from the railway until total post office revenue approached £300.
By 1937, the Postal Department made the Tara Post Office an official office, with trained staff and better postal facilities for the town.
