Moonie State School was established due to a lack of schools nearby to educate the children of the Moonie district.
Mr. Jack Ford donated part of his property, 'Deepwater', as a school reserve, with the original school building coming from Wambo Creek in early 1962. The building had previously been at Millbank, near Kogan.
The school opened on 14 May 1962, with the official opening being held on 2 August 1962.
