Miles Railway Station
The Miles Railway Station was opened in August 1878.
Train services between Brisbane & Miles were advertised as being run on & after 1 August 1878, eleven hours & fifty minutes being allowed for the journey.
Prior to the railway reaching Miles, the railway had reached Columboola in April 1878, which remained the terminus until July 1878. Flooding at Dogwood Creek prevented further rail construction work to the west at the time.
A coordinated transport service was offered to passengers from Columboola, with coaches providing connections through to Roma & Condamine.
Tenders for refreshment rooms were called for in 1880. In 1922 a proposal was put forward to relocate the refreshment rooms to Chinchilla, however local opposition saw this idea abandoned. The refreshment rooms themselves closed in July 1965.
Locomotive facilities were installed in 1897, when an ashpit, water supply, pump, engine shed, & a tank stand were provided. In its early years Miles Railway Station consisted of a crossing loop, goods siding, & a turning triangle for locomotives.
Miles is a good representative of a railway town, the towns growth being in close alignment with the expansion of the Western Line. Miles became the centre of a major timber producing area, & sleepers produced from the area were laid on various lines in the former South-Western and South-Eastern Division of Queensland Railways.
