Edward Murrell Bassingthwaighte was born in Gravesend, England in 1822, & arrived in Sydney in 1834 aboard the 'David Scott'.
As a young man, Edward moved to Goulburn to run Winglo Station. He married Elizabeth (Eliza) Scott from Bungendore NSW in 1848, & together they had 13 children (7 daughters & 6 sons). In the 1850s, the family took up Jinghi Jinghi on the Western Downs & were some of the earliest settlers in the district. At the time of settlement, Jinghi Jinghi was 700 square miles in size & ran mostly sheep under the care of Chinese shepherds.
Edward was one of the first men to put bells on cattle and horses. He bought them by weight at Dan Cooper's store & they cost 5s 6d each. He put them on with dog chains with padlocks.
Edward Bassingthwaighte died in 1898 & was buried on Jinghi Jinghi at his request.
