Charles Harvey was born in Gympie in 1893, the son of Donald Crosbie Harvey & Annie Lawson Cochrane. He was educated at the Central & High Schools, Gympie. He married, firstly, Olive May Connolly on 20 December 1919 & secondly, Thelma May Street on 12 June 1943.
His first position was a bookkeeper with Alexander Stewart and Sons, Ltd., Brisbane, & he subsequently went on to take charge of the Brisbane branch of MacRobertson's.
Charles enlisted in the 26th Battalion in 1915, and after evacuation of Peninsula was transferred to the 12th Battalion, with which he saw service in France, being wounded at Pozieres in 1916. Later in 1916, he was attached to the Flying Corps in Belgium & returned to Australia in 1919.
After returning in 1919, Charles worked at the Income Tax Office in Brisbane & moved to Dalby in 1923 to run the office of Jas. Hunter and Co's. office. At once he interested himself in local matters, becoming secretary of the Dalby Chamber of Commerce. A newspaper article from 1928 stated that he was also secretary to the Dalby Pastoral & Agricultural Association, Dalby Town Band, Dalby Traders' Association, Pastoralists' Association, Gymnasium Club & the local branch of the New Settlers' League of Australia.
