Ambulance Railcar, Dalby, circa 1934-1936

The Dalby Ambulance Railcar & Superintendent E. D. Slaughter, circa 1934-1936.

The railcar was housed in the Dalby Ambulance Brigade building at the Condamine Street crossing.

Dalby was the location of one of the first Rail Motor Ambulances of the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade. A small rail motor was first stationed at Dalby in 1918 & used to serve the branch lines in the area. The rail ambulances were needed in times of wet weather as the black soil roads often became impassable.

In 1924, the Dalby QATB Centre commissioned a new model of rail ambulance. The Dalby QATB motor was a 10hp Citroen petrol driven truck with chain drive, and was reported to have given excellent service in other Darling Downs townships.

The rail ambulance was phased out of service in the late 1950s.
