3rd Dec 2024 3:20PMLudwig Leichhardt, a German explorer, is remembered for three extraordinary expeditions in the 1840s. In 1844, he and his companions embarked on a remarkable journey, traveling nearly 5,000 kilometres from the Darling Downs in Queensland to Port Essington (near Darwin).

Leichhardt's second attempt in 1846 to reach Perth from the Darling Downs was unsuccessful, but he didn't give up. In 1848, he set out once more, but this time, he and his party mysteriously vanished. Their disappearance remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of Australian exploration.

In his own words, Leichhardt declared in 1841:
“The interior, the heart of this dark continent is my goal, and I shall never relinquish the quest for it until I get there.”

Today, these "L" trees serve as silent reminders of his courage, ambition, and the vastness of the untamed Australian wilderness.
